Senior Coding Specialist at University Health summary:

Senior Coding Specialist responsible for accurately coding outpatient, observation, and surgery visits using ICD-10-CM and CPT systems. Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, including HIPAA and JCAHO, while maintaining detailed diagnosis and procedure coding abstracts. Requires extensive coding experience, certifications, and familiarity with healthcare software such as Optum eCAC and Epic EHR.

POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES

Works under the direct supervision of the Coding and Reimbursement Manager, Revenue Integrity Department. Codes Outpatient, Observations and Outpatient Surgery visits utilizing the ICD-10-CM and CPT coding classification systems. Ensures proper assignment and completion of a Diagnosis and Procedure Coding Abstract on all cases. Promotes the Health System's guest relations’ policy. Complies with all Federal and State Regulations and accrediting bodies including but not limited to HIPAA and JCAHO.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• A High school diploma or its equivalent is required. An associate’s degree with Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification or bachelor’s degree with Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification is highly desired and preferred.
• At least ten (10) years of coding experience in professional services, hospital services, or a combination of both is required.
• Experience and working knowledge of Optum eCAC software and Epic EHR.
• Preference will be given to applicants with experience and knowledge of regulatory requirements , Microsoft Office products, and Epic EMR .

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

Must maintain a valid credential offered by: American Health Information Management Association (CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (CPC).
